POM is polyoxymethylene, an engineering thermoplastic characterized by high stiffness, low friction, and dimensional stability. It features good chemical and abrasion resistance, and its excellent rigidity ensures great outcomes. POM is also known as acetal, polyacetal, or polyformaldehyde.
Thanks to the ability to change toolheads, ZMorph VX All-In-One 3D Printer is perfectly capable of CNC machining POM thermoplastic. To do so simply change the toolhead to CNC PRO.
While Voxelizer 2 doesn’t have POM preset pre-installed, it’s available in Voxelizer Experimental. Future versions of Voxelizer will have the POM preset onboard. Meanwhile, if you’re using Voxelizer 2 (not the Experimental version) and want to use the software for POM CNC machining, set the cut speed to 5 mm/s, lead in/out speed to 2.8 mm/s and stepdown to 1 mm.

It’s best to use plastic clamps to mount POM to the ZMorph VX CNC worktable. Alternatively, you may use a strong double-sided foam. Check twice if the material is properly secured because if it’s loose, your project will most likely fail.
We recommend using universal flat end mills for CNC milling in plastics.
As usual, we remind you to close the plastic covers of ZMorph VX while CNC milling anything. This way any loose parts of chips will stay in the enclosure and won’t fly randomly in your workshop. If you’re milling in bigger sheets of material, vacuum the inside of the machine from time to time so the end mill won’t clog and ruin your project.
Many popular POM applications include mechanical gears, sliding and guiding elements, connector elements, cogwheels, and some medical equipment. See samples of CNC machined POM below.
Working with ZMorph VX requires some safety precautions. Do not touch the machine while it’s at work because the moving parts can cause injuries. Some loose elements of your clothing or long hair may get tangled and sucked into the machine if you’re not careful enough.
Recently launched ZMorph Materials Library describes almost 50 engineering materials for subtractive and additive manufacturing. We included the most important features, sample applications, and technical data in order to make working with ZMorph VX All-In-One 3D Printer as hassle-free as possible. You can download it for free via our website.
